Here’s a sobering reality check: According to 2025 research, 22% of people in the United States never review their credit card statements at all. Even more alarming, credit card fraud attempts are up 46% year over year, with $6.2 billion in unauthorized purchases reported last year. And it’s not just fraud — 42% of consumers have at least one subscription they’ve forgotten they’re paying for.

The truth is, most people pay for unauthorized or unnecessary charges simply because they glance at their statements instead of carefully reviewing them. If the balance due seems reasonable, the payment is made without hesitation. And even when you do look, it’s easy to miss something when companies use vague or abbreviated billing names. Add in the fact that many of us, myself included, put nearly every purchase on a credit card to rack up points, and you’re suddenly wading through dozens (or hundreds) of charges each month. That’s a perfect recipe for missed details.
