This story summarises some of the different opinions held on AI by bringing them together using the course title. So we ask is AI a replacement for humans or should we consider it a colleague?

We have split this into two headings of Threats or Benefits and Replacement or Colleague and have included links to recommended articles and videos under each. Please read at least two under each heading and reflect on which one you believe is true. You will follow this up with your own debate on the Blackboard course.

1. Threats or Benefits

What are these? The article Do the Benefits of Artificial Intelligence Outweigh the Risks? highlights 2 benefits and 2 risks.

2. Replacement or Colleague

Generally the “colleague” perspective is partly covered by the benefits above however, when it comes to a fellow-worker what type of activities will robots perform? The following article looks at AI replacing more task-type activities rather than the knowledge, skills and expertise held within job roles:

Whereas the Medium article below poses the potential of AI by saying:

“In 2015, studies showed that by 2020 over 20% of business content would be written by machines. We hit that number a little earlier with in 2017 one in five business articles were not created by humans.”
