A Pragmatic Showdown Between ChatGPT and Gemini · Part 2
It was not even a week after I started the comparison tests between ChatGPT and Gemini that Google pushed another monumental update, announcing Gemini Advanced, now replacing Bard as Google’s AI chatbot assistant, using their latest model Gemini Ultra, surpassing Gemini Pro.
This development renders my original series somewhat obsolete, which was designed to be a competition between ChatGPT-4 and Gemini Pro, just a couple of days after it started. To catch up with Google, then, let’s implement Test #1 with Gemini Advanced, and continue with the latest models in the upcoming comparisons.
For the opening notes and results of the tests with ChatGPT-4 and Gemini Pro, you may refer to the previous post:
Without further ado, let’s see how Gemini Advanced will perform in the Ryhme Scheme challenge.
Prompt: Write a poem where each stanza consists of four lines, and the fourth line of every stanza is exactly “How’s it hanging?” The poem should have at least three stanzas.
Gemini Advanced:
Absolutely! Here’s a poem that fits your request:
The breeze whispers secrets to the trees,
Their leaves dance with playful ease,
Sunlight paints the world so bright,
How’s it hanging?Birds take wing with joyful zest,
Building high a woven nest,
Feathers flutter, soft and light,
How’s it hanging?Clouds drift by in shapes so grand,
Castles formed of shifting sand,
The sky’s a canvas, wide and bright,
How’s it hanging?
The output meets all the criteria, something which Gemini Pro was incapable of providing even after many prompts. Let’s bring in the actual challenge, then!
Prompt: Write a poem following an ABCB rhyme scheme. Each stanza should consist of four lines, where the fourth line of every stanza is exactly “How’s it hanging?” The poem should have at least three stanzas.
Gemini Advanced:
Absolutely! Here’s a poem following your specifications:
The spider on its silken strand,
A masterpiece by tiny hand,
The web shimmers in morning dew,
How’s it hanging?A squirrel with a bushy tail,
Leaps across the grassy trail,
An acorn clutched with eager paw,
How’s it hanging? The old oak tree with branches wide,
Stands with quiet, sturdy pride,
Its leaves a gentle rustling sound,
How’s it hanging?
Just like ChatGPT-4, Gemini Advanced was unable to produce a poem with the specifically requested rhyme scheme with the constraint on the fourth lines, and their incapability persisted despite additional attempts. I will now try it without the fourth line restriction.
Prompt: Create a single stanza of an original poem that follows a strict ABCB rhyme scheme. The content and theme of the poem are up to you, but make sure to accurately adhere to the specified rhyme pattern within this stanza.
ChatGPT-4:
In gardens where the wild roses grow,
The sun dips low, in a sky so vast and blue,
Evening whispers secrets only night will know,
Casting shadows where once the daylight flew.
Gemini Advanced:
The sunlight shimmers on the lake,
Where gentle ripples softly sway,
A tranquil scene my heart does take,
And eases worries far away.
The rhyme schemes are actually ABAB, but that’s close enough 👏
Let’s dare to produce two stanzas, each following the rhyme scheme ABCB.
Prompt: Compose two stanzas of an original poem, each following a strict ABCB rhyme scheme. You have the freedom to choose the content and theme of the poem, but it is essential that each stanza accurately adheres to the specified rhyme pattern.
ChatGPT-4:
In fields where wild daisies grow,
Underneath the sun’s warm glow,
Children’s laughter fills the air,
Chasing dreams without a care.Beneath the moon’s gentle light,
Stars whisper through the night,
Secrets of a world so rare,
Heard by those who dare to dare.
Gemini Advanced:
The ocean breeze, a gentle sigh,
Whispers secrets to the shore,
Where waves unfurl and seagulls fly,
A salty tang I shall adore. The sunlit sand, so warm and bright,
Yields to footprints soft and deep,
My heart takes wing, a joyous flight,
Where sea and sky forever meet.
With this request, ChatGPT was far off the mark, where Gemini was able to produce stanzas with an ABAB rhyme scheme, which is not exactly what was asked but was close enough.
Evaluation: First of all, it must be noted that Gemini Advanced demonstrated a notable improvement over its predecessor, Gemini Pro. Although none of the models was able to meet all of the requirements (poem of at least three stanzas; each stanza to have four lines; every fourth line to be “How’s it hanging?”), Gemini Advanced showed a clear edge against ChatGPT-4 on a test with reduced constraints.
. . . to be continued
I will delve deeper into additional tests and evaluations in the following parts of this series, providing a comprehensive analysis of the practical capabilities of ChatGPT-4 and Gemini Advanced.
