The year 2020 in Review
What a year! Speaking from the community perspective, what a year!
2020 has taught us a lot - about the economy, about what is really important to people, and the future of communities.
AI Saturdays Abeokuta has hosted only physical meetups from inception and members have grown to love the idea of getting to meet face to face every Saturday.
We’ve organized physical cohorts that last 16 weeks long and noticed the drop in attendance over time. This year the team came up with a better strategy amongst many others that helped increase the number of constant attendance by over 15%! We put a 1-week break after every 4 weeks to give participants time to rest, go over previous lessons, and prepare for the coming ones.
Then Corona came! Initially, we educated members and took precautions but had to go fully remote and host classes online. And what would you expect! Numbers dropped.
There are so many reasons for this which majorly rested on the state of the economy. Some major ones;
- Lack of electricity
- Inadequate internet connection
- Low income
It is saddening that there are so many passionate individuals(students, recent grads) who have so much potential to succeed but are limited by society.
Moving forward, we decided to have participants learn using existing courses and guide them through since online classes were not working but the reasons above also made this ineffective.
For this new year, 2021 we are looking forward to trying new, interesting ideas to help grow the community and help more individuals. Starting with removing Saturdays from our name!
AI Saturdays Abeokuta would become AI Abeokuta and would no longer be limited to Saturday classes/meetups.
Cheers to a wonderful and happy new year!
