In the earlier days people had to rely on animals to move from one place to another. Also some donkeys would be tied to the wooden cars that could be used to carry around people and their luggage. Middle class people use bullock carts and royal families travel around on luxurious beautiful carriages. Approximately it took around 8–12 hours for a horse-drawn carriage to cover 80 km. It’s had its cons and pushed humans to find better faster and more feasible ways to travel.

Then humans came with the concept of cars with three wheels and later with four wheels. Then cars became a new normal and could be seen all over the roads.

First, car used to have manual windows and even now that is automated from the rear views mirrors to cameras installed in the car. When you think humans can’t go beyond that, you are wrong. Tesla took it up sixth gear. The company launched smart cars complete with self-driving capabilities and even the ability to open garage doors you can literally just cruise through the journey. What exactly fuels this car apart from electric batteries? Of course, IOT.

Internet of Things:

IOT refers to connection of billions of complex devices like electronics, sensors, … These tangible devices connect and interact with each other over a wireless network and operate without any intervention by humans. IOT in automobile industry is really immense. They revolutionize the way people interact with the vehicles.

IOT in Tesla:

One such model is Tesla, a car model that functions through IOT was launched in the year 2012.If you have ever missed you could enjoy a solo drive to the mountains and feel the peace around you without having to actually drive. Tesla with their ‘Autopilot feature’ made the dream come true. Autopilot is an advanced driver assistant system that enhances safety and convenience behind the wheel.

Tesla vehicle is equipped with 8 external cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a powerful onboard computer which provides additional layer of safety to guide you on your journey. Tesla uses an advanced suit of cameras and neutral net processing to provide us with autopilot and similar features. These models come up with a traffic aware cruise control that matches a speed of your car to the surrounding tracking. Autopilot enables features like enabling your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically.

Whereas the ‘auto steer’ feature assists in steering within a clearly marked lane. When Auto steer is in use, ‘The pressure sensors’ measures the amount of torque that you apply to the steering wheel and if insufficient torque is applied, an escalating series of audible and visual alerts remind you to place your hands to your wheel.

All of the data are constantly sent to the internet for it to prevent accidents and ensure that you are attentive while driving.

Tesla has a navigate feature in the car. This can suggest lane changes to optimize your route. All you need to do is tell your car where to go.

‘Parsif mode’ will automatically search for a parking spot and enable self-parking.

Car accidents have contributed to a huge number of deaths over the years and Tesla with the help of IOT finds that it is provided with a data connection through spacex star link.

Tesla records some telemetry from the cars to help it fix and improve maintainence of the cars. Tesla decide to use driver monitoring options to ensure the safety of the users. It has cameras to capture drivers status and setting off alarms in case they are drowsy or losing focus.

The GPS in the car will receive the signal from multiple satellites at the time of arrival which will be different from the time of transmission. We can’t rely on these GPS at times. So, Tesla uses sensors by matching camera data with vision maps so that you can detect the exact location of the vehicle.

Using IOT, Tesla not only designed a technology called ‘Sentry mode’ to protect from being your car stolen but also when it is being killed by one of you jealous neighbours.

The application of IOT in Tesla is vast. There is really no saying what else can be do with it?
