When I say ‘AIGA’, you think talks. But AIGA/NY is much more than that, and it has much more it can become. Will you be a part of shaping the next chapter?

How Far We’ve Come

AIGA/NY has always strived to be more than simply a professional club. In recent years, guided by my predecessors, AIGA/NY has designed and programmed the South Street Seaport gallery (Annex); lent its talents to businesses in East New York (IDeA:ENY), and helped rebuild communities hit by Hurricane Sandy (Design Relief). Each of those projects redefined what AIGA/NY could be. Today, it’s a group that not only hosts talks about design, but engages its community through design. Doing both keeps us grounded, connected — and, with your help, relevant.

What’s At Stake

Staying relevant is both a challenge and an opportunity. A perception exists that AIGA isn’t as relevant as it was 30 years ago, because it hasn’t shifted with the industry — whether that’s with the new ways we work, and the new media we work in, the challenges we face or even the titles we give ourselves. But if there’s truth in that, then it’s the responsibility of the board to step up, to constantly reimagine and reinvent what AIGA can be. It’s on us. And maybe you.

Why we need you

New voices are the board’s life’s blood. They help us ask big questions about design’s role in New York, and the bigger world: What’s design’s role in society today? How can it help? What are its limitations? And what more could it become? We need our board members to help us experiment with answers. So if you want to tackle those questions, then we hope you’ll consider helping lead AIGA/NY. Anyone can apply, because we know that talent, energy and the future of design, will come from all corners.

Nominate yourself

We’re extending open board nominations through tomorrow night and hosting a mixer starting at 6:30pm in AIGA HQ. Bring your questions, ideas and meet some current board members. I’ll see you there.

Thanks to Cliff Kuang for the heavy metal copy editing.
