Many famous and wealthy northerners began wintering in Aiken at the turn of the 19th century. One of the “Winter Colony” cottages, Banksia, is now the Aiken County Historical Museum. Tap into Southern History and stroll through the exhibits on Aiken’s past, present and future, changing frequently for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages. One of the original “Winter Colony” estates is Rose Hill, the first property in Aiken listed on the Historic Register and where the Garden Club of South Carolina began 75 years ago.

The beautiful 100-plus year old home is just two blocks from Aiken’s commercial district and is now open for overnight guests and retreats. The Islein’s of New York also built their winter home in Aiken around the turn of the century and Mrs. Islein immediately began developing the gardens. Bequeathed to the city upon her death, Hopelands Gardens is now a tranquil spot for visitors to meander the paths and trails.
