As a UX designer with a keen interest in artificial intelligence (AI), I have noticed the growing intersection of AI and UX design. I am particularly enthusiastic about the potential impact of adaptive user interfaces (AUIs) on enterprise applications. AUIs utilize AI elements to identify and automate common tasks, ultimately saving time and enhancing user experiences. While AUIs are increasingly common in consumer-focused applications, their adoption in enterprise applications remains slower. In this blog post, I will explore the advantages of AUIs in enterprise settings and suggest a design process to aid UX designers in integrating AUIs into their work.

AUIs present several benefits for enterprise applications. They have the capability to automate routine and repetitive tasks, liberating workers to focus on more complex decisions. AUIs are generally considered low-risk and low-cost investments since they often necessitate less intricate AI compared to other innovative approaches and provide a readily calculable return on investment. Moreover, AUIs maintain user involvement, facilitating automation without forfeiting human oversight.

UX designers are ideally positioned to identify and implement AUIs in enterprise applications. By observing the world through the users’ perspective, UX designers can pinpoint situations where AUIs might assist, anticipate frequently occurring scenarios, and design interactions that adapt to users’ requirements. However, a systematic approach for UX designers to identify and evaluate AUI opportunities is currently lacking, and existing design processes and tools do not accommodate AUIs.

Some prevalent AUI design patterns include:

  1. Predictive text input: AUIs can provide text input suggestions based on prior user input or context, streamlining the process for users to complete forms or search for information.
  2. Task automation: AUIs can learn from users’ actions and automate recurring, repetitive tasks, such as ordering supplies or accessing patient information.
  3. Personalized recommendations: AUIs can examine users’ preferences and behaviors to deliver tailored recommendations, like proposing relevant articles or products.

AUIs represent an untapped opportunity for UX designers to innovate with AI in enterprise applications. By establishing a systematic approach to identify and implement AUIs, UX designers can contribute to the creation of more efficient, user-friendly interfaces that save time and elevate user experiences. As AI technology progresses, it is crucial for UX designers to adopt and adapt to these new advancements, pushing the limits of what is achievable in the realm of user experience design.
