Airblock Technologies’ CTO Brian H. Hough Awarded North America Winner of DataStax Astra Global Hackathon

Today, Airblock Technologies is pleased announce the news that CTO Brian H. Hough’s submission to DataStax Astra’s Global Hackathon was awarded the North America Winner. Spanning three months with around 5,000 team submissions, DataStax’s global hackathon attracted innovative developers, companies, and builders from around the world, all looking to leverage the power of data, databases, and serverless technology.

The DataStax Holiday Hackathon was open to developers from anywhere in the world in order to compete in an exciting contest focused on building innovative modern data applications.

Innovation at the Core of Airblock

In this global hackathon, there were three core goals: (1.) identify an innovative solution to meet the challenge requirements; (2.) build a base upon which we can scale our Airblock platform; and (3.) learn the best use cases for big data, analytics, and leveraging data pipelines for advanced computation. To support these efforts, Brian got right to work by building with a customer-centric mindset.

To stand out in the competition, he engineered an innovative take on Airblock’s asset management, tracking, and surveillance thesis, with a space-themed, intergalactic layer. Building off of the success of Airbnb for houses, Brian developed a solution for interplanetary vacation booking leveraging DataStax Astra: SpaceBNB.

While this solution might not be seen until 10 years from now, the base for the Airblock platform was forged here. Considering how data can be more actionable, responsive, and available, Brian incorporated Airblock’s central thesis into this fun and innovative hackathon submission, aligning with DataStax’s theme of aerospace, next generation technology, and modern data-driven applications.

Experimenting With New Technologies

DataStax is an open, multi-cloud stack for modern data apps. DataStax gives enterprises the freedom of choice, simplicity, and true cloud economics to deploy massive data, powering rich interactions on multi-cloud, open source and Kubernetes. DataStax is built on proven Apache Cassandra™ and the Stargate™ platform.

For some background context, DataStax powers modern data apps for 500 of the world’s most demanding enterprises, including The Home Depot, T-Mobile, Intuit and half of the Fortune 100. The Airblock team enjoyed diving into this advanced technological framework and building within it throughout the hackathon.

Building an Early-State Startup with an Innovation-First Mindset

As an early-stage startup, building momentum and scaling are two top priorities at Airblock. In our mission to digitally transform the aviation and aerospace supply chains to bring the industry into the 21st century, we must be willing to re-engineer status quo norms to develop more efficient, faster, and better solutions. Hackathons are not only are a great challenge and competition, especially competing among almost 5,000 teams, but they are also a test at how innovative a team can be with extremely limited amounts of time and resources. As a multicultural and multilingual technology company, joining this global hackathon was a wonderful experience to join the global technology community and share what we are capable of here at Airblock.

“This recognition is a testament to our innovation-first mindset and culture here at Airblock, and I could not be more proud of our team,” said Brian H. Hough, Chief Technology Officer & Co-Founder at Airblock Technologies. “As an early-stage startup, we are often asked why we are the team to digitize aviation supply chains. This global hackathon is a prime example of what we are capable of — being strategic in tackling ambitious goals, developing scalable technology that makes an impact, and leading by example, and with passion, to accomplish the job.”

Airblock invites businesses, strategists, advisors, partners, and investors to join the company in digitizing aviation and aerospace supply chains to bring the industry into the 21st century. If you are interested in helping us turn static data into actionable information, we would like to meet with you.
