AirGap 2023 Recap: A Year of Innovation and Security
As we bid farewell to 2023, let’s take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of AirGap and the milestones that defined our year.
One thing that we would like to highlight when looking back at 2023 is of non technical nature; We were delighted to celebrate Airgap’s 6th anniversary this summer. Since our inception, we have had the privilege of serving tens of thousands of people, and our user base continues to grow steadily. This growing adoption is a testament to the increasing recognition of the necessity for self-custody and the demand for an open-source solution. We are proud to have been able to meet these needs with AirGap. We are thankful for our community which helped us to improve and grow over the years.
Introducing AirGap Knox
In April, we unveiled AirGap Knox, the newest addition to our product lineup. AirGap Knox is a revolutionary addition to the AirGap open-source solution that takes security to the next level. By leveraging the security capabilities of Android Enterprise-recommended devices, it provides true offline security by automatically disabling all forms of network on an operating system level.

Introducing Isolated Modules
One of the newest leaps forward this year was the introduction of the Isolated Modules which was released in November. With Isolated Modules, AirGap expands on its three core pillars: Security, Open-Source, and Community:
Security:
The AirGap code used to be one large, solid block. Now, with isolated modules, the code has been untangled and is separated into distinct, modular components. This makes the codebase more flexible, allowing for easier development, updates, and maintenance.
Open Source and Community:
This new structure gives the community the possibility to develop their module and add their favorite chain. This takes the Open Source concept to the next level as anyone can contribute to AirGap without any restrictions. Each Isolated Module works on its own, making sure that no module can affect the other — which ultimately increases the security. Learn more.
The debut of Isolated Modules — Rootstock’s integration
November brought a groundbreaking collaboration with Rootstock (RBTC), as we proudly announced its integration through AirGap’s Isolated Modules. Rootstock (also known as RSK) is a smart contract platform that is designed to bring smart contract capabilities to the Bitcoin blockchain. Learn More.
Chain Integrations
What would be a wallet without any new integrations? We are delighted to have to opportunity to integrate the following chains in the last year. We are looking forward to being an integral solution to each of these protocols
- Internet Computer Protocol: In February, we proudly integrated the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) into AirGap, reinforcing our commitment to embracing cutting-edge blockchain technologies.
- Coreum: March saw the expansion of our supported networks with the addition of Coreum, enabling users to take control of their digital assets securely.
- Optimism: June marked another significant step as AirGap added support for the Optimism Network, enhancing user-friendly and secure digital asset management.
- Rootstock — In December, AirGap integrated the Rootstock blockchain into AirGap via Isolate Modules.

imToken Wallet Integration
Over the years AirGap was always on the forefront of security and other technical innovations. One of the most recent ones was in 2022 when we co-developed the QR-Code standard EIP 4527. Which made it possible for users to not only use the AirGap Vault with the Wallet. Instead watch wallets like MetaMask, RabbyWallet, BlueWallet, and others could be used in combination with the Vault.
Now in December, we extended AirGap Vault’s support to imToken Wallet by integrating the QR-Code standard EIP 4527. This strategic move ensured users could leverage the security of AirGap Vault and the usability of imToken Wallet. AirGap has always been about giving you choices. We aim to support a wide array of wallets, and with imToken joining the lineup, we now support a total of 7 wallets. You can check the list of Supported Wallets here.
AirGap Metal Plates
We kicked off the year with the exciting launch of the AirGap Shop, your one-stop destination for state-of-the-art products designed to secure your digital assets. The highlight of this launch was the AirGap Recovery Plates — a game-changer in safeguarding crucial seed phrases. Crafted from robust steel, these plates offered unmatched protection, being fire-resistant up to 1450 degrees, impervious to water, and corrosion-resistant.
