Traditional seed phrase storage methods can be risky. Paper can get lost or destroyed, and digital documents are vulnerable to hacking. Given the high stakes of seed phrase loss, our community asked if we could recommend a storage method that would withstand anything life throws at it. Whilst having a look at solutions on the market we noticed that many of these were expensive, complicated and not up to the standard that we were looking for. Therefore, we introduced our own stainless steel recovery plates about 2 years ago. Their accessible price and especially its resistance to environmental factors like fire and water made it a favorite of many.
However, Engraving plates required some skills with a specialized engraving tool and quite a lot of force, to crave the letters deep enough into the hardened stainless steel. Which makes them less accessible for some users. We knew there was room for improvement, and that’s where the new Punch Plates come in.
Introducing Punch Plates: Secure, Simple, and Durable
Each AirGap Punch Plate, engraved on both sides, features a total of 24-word slots for comprehensive seed phrase storage and protection. Our Punch Plates are made from 2.5mm thick heavy-duty SAE 304 stainless steel — resistant up to 2550°F / 1450°C. Therefore, they can resist a house fire (1500°F / 815°C ) and on top of that they are rustproof, and virtually indestructible. Each plate comes with pre-etched grids that allow you to punch or mark specific locations corresponding to the first four letters of each word in your seed phrase. This innovative approach is simple, intuitive, and requires no engraving skills or specialized tools.
How Punch Plates Work
To use the Punch Plates, you only need to punch the first four letters of each word into the plate. This simple step is sufficient to identify each word in your seed phrase, allowing you to restore your crypto wallet when needed. The plates are compatible with all BIP39 wallet setups, including popular brands like AirGap, Ledger, and Trezor. However, we recommend using them with the AirGap Wallet/Vault setup for enhanced security, usability, and open-source accessibility.
