What is Rootstock?
Rootstock (Formerly known as RSK) is a smart contract platform that is secured by the Bitcoin network. It is a sidechain of Bitcoin, which means that it is connected to the Bitcoin blockchain through a consensus mechanism known as merge-mined proof of work (PoW). Over 60% of Bitcoin’s hash power currently mines Rootstock. This means that Rootstock is mined by more hashpower than any other chain, except Bitcoin itself.
Rootstock is designed to expand the functionality of the Bitcoin blockchain and address limitations such as its slow transaction speed and high fees. It makes it possible to develop and deploy smart contracts on Bitcoin using an advanced version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) known as the Rootstock Virtual Machine (RVM).
The network has rapidly become known as ‘the home of DeFi on Bitcoin’ due to the growing number of users around the world using the network to access a range of apps, tokens, and financial services all secured by Bitcoin. This includes decentralized exchange Sovryn, lending and borrowing platform Tropykus, and Bitcoin collateralized stablecoin protocol, Money on Chain.
Today, Rootstock is considered the most decentralized and secure Bitcoin-based smart contract platform in the world. It is maintained, upgraded, and supported by hundreds of committed engineers and builders around the world.
Building on Bitcoin
Developers experienced in building on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible chains can easily deploy decentralized applications (dApps) and integrations on the network. Developers can use the same Solidity tools and libraries they are accustomed to when building on Ethereum, including Hardhat, Truffle, web3.js, and ethers.js.
With renewed interest in Bitcoin emerging from the birth of Ordinals and the Taproot upgrade, Rootstock has established itself as the leading Bitcoin layer 2 with over 11 million transactions to date and over $300m TVL in DeFi dapps, bridges and the trustless two-way peg that connects it to Bitcoin.

By adding Rootstock to AirGap we are enabling a growing community to access DeFi on Bitcoin and store your funds in a secure and accessible way. Rootstock is the first integration that was done in a new revolutionary fashion — with AirGap’s newest approach: Isolated Module. This innovative feature introduces a novel layer of protection by isolating each module, (each chain integration) ensuring that vulnerabilities in one module do not compromise the integrity of the entire system. Imagine it as distinct compartments within a fortified vault, where even if one compartment were to experience a breach, the others remain impenetrable. But this is just one exciting part of isolated modules: This new approach not only brings more security to AirGap, but it also empowers developers and users alike to build and interact with blockchain functionalities within a secure and adaptable environment.
