Explore Arbitrum ecosystem while keeping your private key offline
Arbitrum is a layer-2 solution that scales the Ethereum blockchain. Layer-2 is a term used for solutions that scale layer-1 while maintaining the same security measures and decentralization of layer-1.
Layer-2 solutions are becoming more popular because they allow for scalability and increased throughput while still holding the integrity of the Layer-1 blockchain. This results in total decentralization, transparency, security, and a smaller carbon footprint and energy consumption.
Arbitrum seems to be the hottest layer-2 on the Ethereum ecosystem, with over $1 billion in total value locked in at the time of writing. That’s why we’re writing this guide: to show you how to set up a cold wallet on your phone using AirGap on the Abitrum L2 blockchain.
In this article, we will show you how to set up a cold wallet with AirGap to be used on Arbitrum, and use Arken finance as an example of how to interact with DEFI platforms on Arbitrum using the same cold wallet setup.
Setting up a cold wallet: Understanding the AirGap Vault — MetaMask combo
MetaMask is the most widely used wallet for interacting with EVM chains (for which arbitrum is one), but at the same time, it’s a hot wallet. MetaMask is secure and has no history of hacking but generally, hot wallets are less secure than cold wallets.
When you pair AirGap Vault with MetaMask, this introduces a layer of security to your private key. The Vault serves as cold storage for securely keeping your private key and signing transactions, while MetaMask serves as a watch-only wallet to interact with arbitrum.
Set up AirGap — MetaMask and connect to Abitrum

- After setting up MetaMask with AirGap, Add Abitrum RPC to MetaMask.
- Open Metamask and click the network dropdown menu.
- click “Add Network” on the pop-up.
- Add the following details on the “Add a network” page and Click the Save button.
Network Name Arbitrum One
New RPC URL https://arb1.arbitrum.io/rpc
Chain ID 42161
Currency Symbol ETH
Block Explorer URL https://arbiscan.io/
- You’ve successfully been connected to the Arbitrum network.
Swapping on Arken finance
Visit Arken finance
Click the “Launch App” button.
Select the Arbitrum network button.
Select MetaMask and approve the connection.
Select the simple mode
Select your trading pair and input an amount. In this guide, we will be swapping 0.001 ETH for USDT.
Confirm the swap.
Click the confirm button on MetaMask.
Scan the QR code that appears in MetaMask with the AirGap Vault Scanner
Scan the QR code on MetaMask from the AirGap Vault
Sign the transaction.
Select QR code signing
Click the “Get signature” button.
Scan the QR code on the Vault from MetaMask. You should get a pop-up from MetaMask saying the transaction has been successfully broadcasted.
Your transaction was successfully signed offline and broadcasted by MetaMask.
The same steps can be followed for other DeFi platforms on Arbitrum.
