How To Use Trader Joe while keeping your private key offline with AirGap Vault and MetaMask
The vast majority of individuals who use decentralized finance (Defi) platforms do so with a hot wallet, this makes their private key accessible to a network, which in turn leaves them vulnerable to hackers.
With AirGap Vault’s recent integration with MetaMask, you can interact with any Defi platform on all EVM-compatible chains while keeping your private key offline. To this function, you have an additional layer of security compared to the typical Defi user. In this blog, we will walk you through how you can interact with Trader Joe, to swap while keeping your private key offline.
Trader Joe is a One-stop-shop decentralized trading platform and the most popular defi platform on the Avalanche chain network (AVAX).
Understanding the AirGap Vault — MetaMask combo
MetaMask is the most widely used wallet for interacting with Defi platforms on EVM chains, but at the same time, it’s a hot wallet. MetaMask is secure and has no history of hacking but generally, hot wallets are less secure than cold wallets.
When you pair AirGap Vault with MetaMask, this introduces a layer of security to your private key. The Vault serves as cold storage for securely keeping your private key and signing transactions, while MetaMask serves as a watch-only wallet to interact with Defi platforms like Trader Joe.
Set up AirGap — MetaMask and connect to Trader Joe

- After setting up MetaMask with AirGap, Add AVAX RPC to MetaMask.
- Visit Trader Joe
- Click the connect button at the top right
- Select MetaMask
- Select the connected AirGap Wallet and then click the next button
- Click the connect button
- You’ve successfully connected your wallet to Trader Joe.
How to Swap on Trader Joe
- To swap, visit the trade page.
- Select your trading pair and input and amount. In this guide, we will be swapping 0.3 AVAX for USDC.
- Click the swap button to initiate the exchange.
- Confirm the swap
- Click the confirm button on the MetaMask pop-up.
- Scan the QR-code that appears in MetaMask with the AirGap Vault Scanner
- Open the vault and click the scanner.
- Scan the QR code on MetaMask from the AirGap Vault.
- Click the sign transaction button.
- Sign the transaction and select Offline Device.
- Scan the QR code from MetaMask.
- Click the get signature button on MetaMask to scan the QR code on the Vault.
- Scan the QR code on the Vault from MetaMask
- Your transaction was successfully signed offline if you see the image below.
The same steps can be followed for other functions such as farming, providing liquidity, staking, lending, and borrowing.
