Two-thirds of these air mining startups are working with carbon dioxide for the chemicals industry.

Seven more startups and projects comprise the second in a monthly update from the Air Miners web team. For more context and to get involved, head to airminers.org.

This month, we’re serving up fresh finds according to three categories:

  • One Netherlands-based startup focused on carbon dioxide capture
  • One Redwoods sequestration project
  • Five startups making products from emissions and atmosphere

CAPTURE

Antecy

Netherlands

Capturing and concentrate (ambient) CO2 at low prices for direct use and production of fuels and chemicals, using solar or wind energy. With the help of an organic, non-amine sorbent, turns ANTECY the negative of CO2 (greenhouse effects, environmental costs) into a positive, whereby CO2 becomes the ideal renewable resource for our Carbon Economy (fuels, chemicals and other materials).

SEQUESTRATION

1 Million Redwoods

USA

The 1 Million Redwoods Project draws on ecological, economic, and social innovations with a multi-scalar approach that incorporates land conservation, ecological restoration, multi-disciplinary research, and large-scale plant propagation in a restorative native species nursery. The nursery will function as a living library and laboratory that will help to safeguard rare and endangered plant and fungal genetics of the redwood range.

PRODUCT

Liquid Light

USA

Liquid Light’s core technology is centered on low-energy catalytic electrochemistry to convert carbon dioxide to chemicals, combined with hydrogenation and purification operations. By adjusting the design of our catalyst, our technology can produce a range of commercially-important multi-carbon chemicals. Additionally, by using ‘co-feedstocks’ along with carbon dioxide, a plant built with Liquid Light’s technology can produce multiple products simultaneously.

Novomer

USA

Novomer is commercializing a family of competitively priced chemicals and high performing polymers from ethanol and carbon monoxide. With proprietary catalyst and process developments, Novomer enables these renewable feedstocks to be cost competitively transformed into chemical building blocks for a wide variety of industrial products and applications.

Dioxide Materials

USA

Dioxide Materials™ is creating a new chemical value chain using carbon dioxide and renewable energy (instead of oil and gas) as a feedstock for the synthesis of high value fuels and chemicals. We are also developing a new generation of low-cost, low-powered CO2 electrochemical sensors for Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems. The devices are microscale versions of the CO2 electrolyzers being developed for CO2 conversion. As outlined in the plan below, our technology will create thousands of jobs and will make the U.S. the world leader in the reduction of greenhouse gases.

NovoNutrients

USA

NovoNutrients has developed a proprietary process that uses microbes to convert CO2 from industrial emissions into food for fish and other animals. Our Novomeal is an all-natural superfood made of single-cell microorganisms packed with protein, vitamins, essential amino acids, anti-oxidants, fatty acids and other beneficial nutrients. Novomeal is being developed as a premium, high-protein feed alternative to fishmeal, for the aquaculture, livestock, swine and poultry markets. In addition to Novomeal, NovoNutrients is also developing Novoceuticals, a line of specialty feed additives, such as carotenoids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

LanzaTech

USA

Founded in 2005, LanzaTech is commercializing a pioneering carbon capture and reuse technology that converts carbon-rich waste gases (containing carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and/or hydrogen) into high-quality, advanced biofuels and chemicals. Through production of chemicals, LanzaTech presents a route to carbon sequestration, whereby carbon in waste gases and residues is sequestered into a new product — e.g., 2,3-Butanediol from waste steel mill gases is a chemical used for the production of nylon and rubber. The LanzaTech process will help the U.S. meet growing renewable fuel obligations, generate new revenue streams for heavy manufacturing, and create skilled green jobs. Experts estimate that LanzaTech fuels reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% compared to conventional gasoline. By utilizing waste streams, LanzaTech’s fuels are wholly outside the food value chain, with no impact on land or water.

JOIN

As we continue to chart our course, we enthusiastically welcome partnership with your air mining project. We’re looking for complementary approaches to atmospheric carbon dioxide, facilitating collaboration among scientists, technologists, and business communities to spark and scale unimagined inventions.

Do you have an organization for us to assess? A comment on our approach? A partnership request? Email us at contact@airminers.org and we’ll reply within a day or two.
