Here’s what films would be nominated if the Academy Awards were about bonding with your BFF.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the contenders for the 2020 Oscars race this morning, and people sure have a lot of opinions! While some shrug off the 90-year-old award show as irrelevant, the public is right to be concerned with its inner workings. Careers are made and broken on Oscar clout, and the spectacle is a valuable gateway for creators to earn recognition, cultural capital, and independence. The Oscars set the standard for what success looks like within the industry.

There’s plenty of ink on the web about how the Academy is consistently lacking in representation, but there’s another gap in how the institution models success. In the middle of a nationwide loneliness epidemic, film and television is a powerful force for bringing us together, starting conversations, and strengthening our relationships with the people who matter most. The Academy proposed a vague “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film” category in 2018, which was quickly walked back after immediate backlash. Inspired by our data about the most popular film trailers friends watched together on Airtime, we’ve compiled a list of films that we’d nominate if there were an Oscar category to celebrate how film brings us together.

Midsommar

The perfect post-heartbreak movie to watch with the girls. Warning: keep flammable substances away from the screen.

Knives Out

A classic “whodunnit”, Knives Out has perfectly timed shocks and moments of laughter that will please your whole party.

Uncut Gems

A fast-paced ride about a man with risky sources of income that get him in trouble. Honestly, that describes a lot of movies but this one might be the best.

Us

Jordan Peele’s second thriller will have you seeing double…you might wanna hide all the scissors after watching this film. 👯😱

Queen and Slim

There are many ways a Tinder date can go, but this is one way you’d never imagine. This intense and unpredictable love story will have you on the edge of your seat.

Hustlers

Basically the most powerful girl power there ever was.

Booksmart

Two goody-two-shoes have realized too late that they didn’t fully experience high school. They attempt to make up for it by doing everything in one night. Literally, everything.

Wild Rose

A feisty Scottish singer with big dreams and a big mouth chases her dreams while running from the past that’s chasing her.

Waves

Grab a box of tissues and a shoulder to cry on because Waves will not leave a dry eye in the house.

Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker

“The Rise of Skywalker” is the last movie in the Skywalker saga but it’s spawned a whole new generation of Star Wars fans that aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
