Welcome to the Airtime People series! This blog showcases the people at Airtime and what it’s like to work here.

David is a Senior Software Engineer, joining us from our very own backyard - Palo Alto!

An easy one to get started: Who are you and what do you do at Airtime?

Hi all! My name is David Collins. I’m a Senior Software Engineer on the Media Team and very eager to get started!

The team is so excited to have you here with us. How would you describe Airtime in one sentence?

Airtime is for real-time socialization around web-based media, between the times you hang out with each other — like sharing an earbud with as many friends as you like, wherever they are.

Well, put! Since you’re here, What stood out to you during the interview process that made you join Airtime?

David and Bubo, the owl.

For the most part, the interview team consisted of friendly, interesting people, with a variety of interview styles. They were each ready to discuss their role and the overall mission of the company, and they demonstrated real interest and curiosity about me. One thing that really distinguished itself about their hiring process, was an excellent programming challenge offered with the email invitation to the onsite interview. That set a good tone for all that followed.

At Airtime, we believe good ideas can come from anyone. If you could add one product feature to Airtime’s app, what would it be?

Definitely Co-browsing. I actually thought it was in the feature set already, and I described it to my 16-year-old step-daughter. She role-plays with friends over quotev, and the idea of being able to be both virtual and live with her friends really excited her.

That is a great idea! The product team is on it. Speaking of invaluable ideas, what is the best advice you ever received thus far in your impressive career?

When I was very new to professional engineering, one of my bosses at Apple detected a hint of passivity on my part when diagnosing a failure. He said:

“Take control of the computer. Make it tell you what you want to know — not what it wants to tell you.”

I’ve been a pretty aggressive debugger ever since!

Couldn’t have agreed more, take control of your destiny. Lastly, Airtime is big on content, what are you currently watching on Netflix?

Me? Watch mindless TV?? I scoff at the idea! I’m far too busy with my personal study of the collected works of Blaise Pascal in an attempt to reconcile his ideas with those of Sartre and the other existentialists. Nah, It’s just that the list is too long for the form here. I binge stream things all the time.
