Well, As Carl Sagan once said.

Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence

In order to fufill this claim to make this the Ultimate guide on resume making, I’ll give you a short backstory. The year 2022 is almost ending, I’ve seen a lot of my friends using their own set of commands and prompts for GPT. Tons of guides available online.

But none of them appealed to me. They were essentially saying the same thing. Generic commands which didn’t actually help solve problems. And even if some of my friends did figure out a few commands it wasn’t still comprehensive enough for me.

Hence, I decided to give it a go myself. And I promise one thing, this is will not be generic and repetitive. It will be full of examples, the reasoning behind the prompts and then a prompt with blanks you can easily reuse. And boy will it be detailed ( Well, that’s what I hope : )

Table of Contents

  1. Before you do anything else
  2. Asking GPT to Pretend to be an Applicant Tracker System ( ATS )
  3. Asking GPT to make the best work experience bullet points
    3.1 Writing from scratch
    3.2 Improving Current Work Experience
3.3 Rewriting / Rephrasing Current Work Experience
  4. Asking GPT to give you the best technical skills for a particular job
  5. Asking GPT to rewrite your academic projects
5.1 Writing New Academic Project & Ideas from Scratch
    5.2 Rewriting/Rephrasing Current Academic Projects
  6. Asking GPT to write a custom cover letter for your Job Description

Also, I’ll be continuously updating this and I’m working on a webapp which can do all this for you so keep rechecking once in a while. Hope you get that dream job soon !

So without further ado. Let’s get Started !

1. Before you do anything

Ask GPT to Remember your resume. Here’s how :

So you start by selecting all your resume details like such :

And Paste like with the following prompt :

< Paste Resume Content > ....
Hi ChatGPT, Keep this in your memory as “Devesh's Resume” whenever I say it in any of the future chats.

The Reasoning behind this is so that even if it forgets anything, you can always ask GPT to get back your document and it saves you the trouble of repasting all your content.

2. Asking GPT to Pretend to be an Applicant Tracker System ( ATS )

Next, Since we don’t have a real ATS at hand, let’s try and understand what an NLP Model i.e. ChatGPT might think of the best keywords in your resume.

Check if those are really the ones that you want to highlight.

Hi ChatGPT, Pretend to be an ATS. Ask me for a Job Description. Remember it always as the “Target Job Description” for this chat. Wait for my response. What keywords would you highlight in Devesh's Resume as matching and which ones would be missing ? Please provide a well formatted response.

Note : Regenerate the Response if GPT creates a Job Description on its own instead of asking and waiting. Here’s how that would look like.

Great, Now paste any Job Description that you are applying for :

We’ll take this ML Engineer Intern as our sample.

And you should get a response like this.

This accomplishes a few things.

  1. It gives you actionable intel on where you going right and where you were wrong
  2. It also provides potential solutions to improve your ATS Match

Now, let’s move on to the next step.

3. Asking GPT to make the best work experience bullet points

Now, for the perfect work experience. Know that anything more that 5 points might be too much for the recruiter to read in a glance However, there are a couple of scenarios in this case.

3.1. Writing from scratch

Hi ChatGPT, Create 5 bullet points highlighting my work experience as <Job Position eg. Software Developer>, showcasing my ability to accomplish the requirements matching with the Target Job Description. Optimize to be easily understood at a glance. Use strong, confident, optimistic vocabulary.

This will get you something like this :

This would give you a good starting point if you don’t know what exactly to write. Else you could use the second approach.

3.2. Improving Current Work Experience

Hi ChatGPT, Start by asking me about what I did as <Job Position eg. Software Developer>. Wait for my response. Then create 5 bullet points based on the response, showcasing my ability to accomplish the requirements matching with the Target Job Description. Use numbers to showcase the work done. Optimize to be easily understood at a glance. Use strong, confident, optimistic vocabulary.

Here’s how a sample response would look like !

And Voila !

3.3 Rewriting / Rephrasing Current Work Experience

Next let’s say you already have a set of Work Experience points ready. And you need to just reword or rephrase your current work experience. In that scenario here’s the best prompt.

Hi ChatGPT, Please rewrite the bullet points I have in my current work experience section, showcasing my ability to accomplish the requirements matching with the Target Job Description. Use numbers to showcase the work done. Optimise to be easily understood at a glance. Use strong, confident, optimistic vocabulary.

And the result should look something like this.

Thus, as you can see, we have covered all possible ways to write the Work Experience Section.

4. Asking GPT to give you the best technical skills for a particular job

Hi ChatGPT, please create a technical skills section. It will have relevant skills that are present in Devesh’s Resume and match those with Target Job Description. Follow a format like : Programming Language : Python, Java, C, C++, Rust.

5. Asking GPT to rewrite your academic projects

5.1 Writing New Academic Project & Ideas from Scratch

Hi ChatGPT, please create an academic projects section. Write 3 relevant academic projects for Devesh’s Resume which will match skills, tools with those with Target Job Description.

5.2 Rewriting/Rephrasing Current Academic Projects.

Okay, say you already have a few projects under your belt and would like to just improve their language. Or say you just in your own words what the project was about and you’d like GPT to spruce it up a bit.

Well, here’s the best prompt for the same !

Hi ChatGPT, Start by asking me about what I did in my Academic Project. Wait for my response. Then create 5 bullet points based on the response, showcasing my skills and technologies matching with the Target Job Description. Use numbers to showcase the work done.

Alright, here’s how the prompt would look like !

And Needless to say, the output, is scarily impressive :

6. Asking GPT to write a custom cover letter for your Job Description

With all the above commands, your amazing resume would be ready in no time ! Now like Peanut Butter needs Jelly, An Awesome Resume needs a Fantastic Cover Letter !

And here’s the prompt.

Hi ChatGPT, I need help writing a cover letter for a job. Refer the Target Job Description and Devesh’s Resume and write a customised cover letter. Please showcase how my goals align with the company and how I’m the right fit for the job due to my work experience, my technical skills and any other attributes you deem suitable. Rephrase throughly so that you don’t reuse the same or similar sounding sentences as those in the Target Job Description.

And finally we are done !!

Word of Warning :

While ChatGPT can provide valuable suggestions and feedback for resume making, it’s important to keep in mind that it is an AI language model and not a human expert. It may not be able to fully understand the nuances of certain industries or job roles, and its suggestions should be used as a starting point for further research and refinement. Additionally, it’s crucial to review the final resume for accuracy, grammar, and appropriateness, and to tailor it specifically for each job application. Ultimately, while ChatGPT can be a useful tool in the resume-making process, it’s important to approach it with a critical eye and supplement its suggestions with human expertise and research.

By following these prompts, you can create a comprehensive and customised resume with ChatGPT. Remember to review and edit your resume before submitting it to potential employers. With a little help from ChatGPT, you can stand out in the competitive STEM job market and land your dream job !

And I don’t usually ask for these but if you read all this way down, I’d really appreciate a clap ! Follow for more such content !

Have a great day !
