Celebrating fearless women across the globe

In honor of International Women’s Day, we take a look at inspiring and incredible women around the world.
The Women of Zaatari
Three women in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan are making ends meet in the face of incredible obstacles. “I have the ability to help people, so why should I stop?” says Samia. “I must prove to people that Arab women can accomplish anything they want.”
The Wrestling Cholita
On the other side of the globe, indigenous women in Bolivia are fighting for respect inside and outside the ring. “It’s not easy being a female wrestler. You get hurt in the ring. To be a fighter, you have to be strong,” says Teresa Huayta, who has been performing for five years. “I imagine that in the future, in Bolivia, there will be more equality and more work opportunities.”
Singing Through Prison Walls
Naima Shalhoub is a singer and educator who leads weekly music sessions with incarcerated women at a San Francisco County jail. She also recorded her first album there. “There’s so much that we have to learn about what incarcerated women have to go through,” she says.
Fighting Rape in India: Power Girls
In India, the young women of the Red Brigade, all teenage rape survivors, are fighting back against sexual harassment and assault. “We want respect and our rights,” they say, “Not violence.”
Rapping for Women in Conflict
Amani Yahya, Yemen’s first female rapper, joined forces with four other hip-hop artists to create an album about the difficulties that women in conflict and war face. She’s received death threats for speaking out in favor of women’s rights. “The message that we’re trying to show…is that a woman… can be a leader,” Yahya says. “She can be whatever she wants.”
