A female friend of mine took an auto home late at night, I told her to call me when she reaches home or in case of any trouble on the way.

We both were anxious and helpless at that moment.

If she could share her location with me and I could track it till she reaches home safely, Wouldn’t that be the solution? This problem set out me to design Jatayu.

JATAYU is an easy to use location sharing application.

It helps people to share their location via GPS, with their friends and family in the time of need.

Name and concept :

Painting by Raja Ravi Varma, Jatayu Vadha

In the Epic Ramayana when Jatayu sees Ravana abducting Sita, he tries to rescue Sita from Ravana . Jatayu fought valiantly with Ravana, but as he was very old Ravana soon got the better of him. As Rama and Lakshmana chanced upon the stricken and dying Jatayu in their search for Sita, he informs them of the fight between him and Ravana and tells them that he had gone south.

Conceptualising the App as a guardian who looks after women on road who travel alone by keeping their friends and family informed about their whereabouts.

Persona :

After having conversations with female friends and colleagues about their experiences and stories of going home or traveling late at night.

Few personas were narrowed down to set clear needs and goals of the people I was designing for.

Drawing the persona of users helps me to empathise, imagine, understand more about their lives.

After narrowing down to few personas it was time to have some clear design directions for the solution.

  • Trust and Transparency : Since the application would be aware of user’s location data, it is necessary that the app keeps it confidential and respect user’s privacy.
  • Simple, Intuitive on the go interactions : Considering user’s context, on the road looking for an auto, crossing road, or waiting for a bus. It’s very important that the app doesn’t require much attention, rather get’s the work done in few taps.

To simplify Information architecture to ideate initial wireframes, basic user task flow was laid out.

wireframes were to visualise the user flow in the application and placements of UI elements.
