A photo has been doing rounds on Kenyan social media, where a woman was spotted roaming the streets of Nairobi with a placard that reads her desperation for a husband. Priscilla Nyambura, a 28 year old mother of a 7 year old girl did what noone has done before. Paraded herself in search of a partner to lift her out of poverty.

She was clad in a white makeshift bridal attire ready to wed any man that offered. Trying to dial the number she has displayed leads to a busy tone so we could not get the true reason that would drive one to such extremes. However, some journalists did get through and she made it to the news.

In this controversy, one main theme emerged. Many were worried about her child. Why was she being dragged into this? The mum may have given up, but the daughter has her whole life in front of her. When she grows up and surfs the internet to find this photo, what will she feel? What us she learning from this sequence of events?

This is an open letter to Priscilla’s daughter and all Kenyan Girls...

“Being a woman is great. Don’t let them cheat you and cloud your view with the lie that life is unbearable. Because it is not. No one is more equipped to live it than you are. When you realize that you have all what you need within you to succeed, you will reach a point where many have struggled to see all their life.

Carry yourself with grace, hold your head up high and face life bravely. You need to face it fearlessly or it will eat you up. Be relentless, be bold, be unassuming. Most of all be good. Remember who you are and all that you are about.

As you walk through life, walk with these three things and you never go wrong.

Your mind

Use it and your life will turn out alright. You are smart, you are resourceful, you are diligent. The mind is a gift that is oft overlooked. When you feel stuck, close your eyes and clear your mind as best as you can. You’re never truly stuck. You just need to change your perspective. A clear mind will be your biggest asset in your life.

Your Gut.

Trust it. Trust it with all of you. Women have a gift. An intuition so strong that noone has been able to decipher its workings. Listen to it and it will save you a lot of heart ache. If your gut warns you against someone, you better listen to it. Learn to obey it and it will grow stronger. To protect you and the ones you love.

Your heart

Women don’t just love. They love fiercely and deeply. Guard your heart. Do not be quick to give your love away because it is a precious but finite resource. You are a vessel through which life is brought forth. Protect your vessel. Giving your heart too freely drains your reserves and renders you and empty shell. An empty woman is a broken woman.

Realize that no one can take away your power without your consent. When you are broken, be courageous. The heart has ways to heal. Try your best not to give up. Get yourself good friends and strong belief in God.

Society will hold you up to a standard that will more often than not be restraining and sometimes downright outrageous. Ignore them. Do you. Dream of the life your desire and be unafraid to try new things. Life makes way for the bold. Get married because you want to, not as a route out of poverty. Believe that you can have the life of your dreams.

Do not judge the actions of fellow women. They may have made decisions that they can’t undo. Prop them up when you can and don’t be quick to throw stones. Tomorrow, that might be you. Be kind to one another because if you don’t who will?

Most of all, always remember that you’re beautiful, you’re precious and you should always be proudly woman”

Love,

Your Sister.
