On June 30th, 2019, the two of us — Maya Eashwaran and Regina Lankenau — flew “across the pond” to embark on an eight-week journalism internship at a British newspaper in San Luis de Sabinillas, a small fishing village in the southernmost province of Málaga, Spain. After sitting through multiple leg-cramping flights, we arrived at our Airbnb — exhausted (very), hungry (always), but ready to hit the road.

We weren’t strangers, but we weren’t close friends either. That all changed as we bonded over daily evening paseos on the beach, consistent misadventures that left us cackling (and sweating profusely), and, of course, our hours-long sobremesas on our terrace, laundry flying behind us and evening espressos in hand.

It is, however, our shared obsession with good food, good stories, and the seemingly ordinary that have come to define our friendship and our writing.

As writers, we live to document and document to live. Welcome to our dinner table.
