Finney’s Life Story

To give you a glimpse of this incredible man’s life story, let’s dig deeper to his early life and career, including his involvement in Bitcoin’s release.

In 1956, Finney was born in Coalinga, California. He finished his education from the California Institute of Technology with a degree in B.S. in Engineering in 1979. A year before he graduated, Finney was employed by APh Technology Consultants. Initially, he was assigned to work on the cash register software department. Later, he developed video games independently while handling other software. He stayed at APh until 1986.

With his interest in encryption, Finney collaborated with Phil Zimmermann in the development of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), an encryption program that provides cryptographic privacy and authentication for data communication. He remained with PGP until he finally retired in 2011.

While at PGP, he pursued honing his software encryption skills and shared his innovative ideas in whatever available project. Ever since he familiarized himself with Cypherpunks and developed the first so-called ‘anonymous remailer’ (a cryptographic-based remailer), which he ran for a period. Also, he developed reusable proof of work (RPOW) in 2004.

Growing Interest in Cryptocurrency

In 2008, Finney became interested when Nakamoto introduced the concept of cryptocurrency. The former became the first individual to acquire the first-ever release of cryptocurrency software and the early recipient of Bitcoins.

Engrossed in the development and promotion of Bitcoins, many people thought that it was Finney and not Nakamoto who was behind the creation of the digital currency.

He collaborated in enhancing the features of Bitcoin significantly and became one of the first miners of the Bitcoin network. In 2010, when Bitcoin became a buzzword, he developed an ‘offline’ wallet system to store the digital coins, which became a huge success during that year.

Being Sober Despite Declining Health

Finney remained fit and healthy even during his 50s. Suddenly, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) syndrome. Despite his deteriorating health, he decided to face life boldly. He continued working ceaselessly, adjusting to his ailment and kept being cheerful.

His mental faculties were still intact as his ever-inquisitive brain continued exploring and experimenting with new ideas. Nothing could hinder his resilience and yearning to keep on working to pursue his passion. Until his last breath, he continued programming, writing codes, and accomplishing his self-allocated targets.

Finney died on August 28, 2014. With his last wish, his body has been cryonically frozen and preserved at a special-purpose facility managed by Alcor Life Extension Foundation. This is to keep his futuristic trend and outlook, which have been the hallmark of his lifelong efforts all throughout when he was alive.
