Feel like making your home a bit smarter this holiday with minimal effort? Look no further. Below are things that can be found in every household and made smarter with popular add-on products, many currently available at attractive prices for the holidays.

1. TV

What you need: Connected streaming device (Google Chromecast, Amazon Firestick, Roku Express)

If your current flat screen TV is not of the ‘Smart’ kind that connects to the internet or comes loaded with apps you can upgrade it with a Smart TV stick such as the Amazon Firestick and Roku Express. Once plugged into the TV’s HDMI port and connected to your home Wi-Fi you can stream content, cast video or music from other devices, and access a growing number of apps offered through the TV stick. Some products (like the Roku Express) also have composite inputs to give even older TV models some new capabilities. Some streaming devices like the Amazon Firestick and Google Chromecast can also use voice control, either through Wi-Fi connection to a smart speaker, or a voice-enabled remote controller.

2. Plug-in Appliances*

What you need: Wi-Fi-connected wall outlet (e.g. Belkin Wemo or iHome Smart Plug)

Coffee makers, lamps and even some air conditioners can now be made smart with the magic of smart wall outlets. These outlets are Wi-Fi connected to allow for remote control and scheduling via a dedicated smartphone app. Smart outlets are great for simple standalone appliances that you want to operate on a schedule or from the comfort of your couch.

There are several popular brands in the market including new Smart Plugs from iHome. Check out this article for short reviews of these devices.

*may not be compatible with appliances that require more than an on/off switch

3. Lighting

What you need: Wi-Fi-connected switch or lightbulbs

Smart lighting is one of the first steps people take when embarking on their smart home journey. There’s no shortage of ways to make your lighting smarter, whether it’s through smart bulbs, smart lightbulb sockets, switches, or a mix of these. Smart lights can be controlled from apps on your smart phone and be included in customized mood settings. Smart bulbs also come in a variety of colors to match any occasion. Even IKEA now offers smart lighting in some regions.

Since we’re talking about a smart home setup that requires minimal investment of time and money, consider smart lighting that works without a device known as a “hub”. Here’s an article that lists the best ones for 2017.

4. Speakers

What you need: Smart speaker with AUX output (Amazon Echo, Amazon Echo Dot or the new Google Home Max)

Smart speakers with a 3.5mm line-out cable can connect to the any existing quality Hi-Fi speakers you already have at home, to give them voice compatibility especially if you like to stream music in your home. All of your smart speaker’s outputs are essentially rerouted through the high quality old speaker to marry it with the smarts of these newer and highly popular gadgets.

5. Heating/Cooling System

What you need: Smart thermostat (e.g. Nest, ecobee)

This one is a bit less trivial to do and more expensive than the rest of this list. Yet the long term savings outweigh the initial cost to purchase a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats help you save money in the long run by optimizing how you use energy to heat and cool your home. Many are also capable to learn your usage patterns to create customized heating schedules according to your needs. What’s more, some smart thermostats are now included in incentive programs provided by electric utilities. If you didn’t have a chance to read our piece on smart thermostats and various rebates available here’s the link to it.

A smart home doesn’t have to be a huge plunge into the unknown — for some people it’s great to start by dipping their toes in through solutions that are easy to start with and provide quick benefits. These smart upgrades give you a taste of what such a home can feel like, when you’re ready.
