Michael Blomberg, former NYC Mayor, just tweeted:

“I’m giving $1.8 billion to @JohnsHopkins for financial aid so admissions
can be permanently need-blind. I want to open the same door of opportunity that I had for generations of talented students, regardless of financial circumstances”

This is the largest donation to a single university and is exclusively for financial aid. Income inequality is a very hot topic right now, and many people believe that solving the access to education for middle to low-income households, is something that can begin to bridge the gap. According to some studies, people estimate that over half of high achieving low/ middle-income students don’t even apply to schools due to fear over affordability and acceptance. This is what Michael Bloomberg is looking to remove with his donation. Finances should not be a factor in decisions and afterward, financial assistance should be generous to those who need it.

Equal opportunity is something that is publicized by many and now it’s time to deliver. There are biases built into almost every industry. We need to eliminate it from the academic process and the rest will fall in line after.
