Online shopping is poised to make our lives easier than ever; what’s simpler than having the exact item you need delivered to your doorstep? It seems like the ultimate way to save time and money, that is until your package is stolen.

According to a survey by insuranceQuotes.com, 23 million Americans have had packages stolen from their residencies. When this happens, consumers are often responsible for locating the contents of the package elsewhere. If the contents are not available locally, one must decide if they should gamble on another shipment. Additionally, they must pay for the item(s) a second time. These two elements can render the original “pros” of online shopping obsolete — leaving any consumer frustrated with the entire experience.

Luckily, you can protect yourself from package thefts — and the headache that often accompanies them — by following the 5 suggestions below.

1) Home Security Cameras

Home security cameras are an effective way to deter potential “porch pirates.” Your camera should show the area in which your packages are delivered, and it should be in plain sight (if a thief spots your camera, they are less likely to try and steal your package). Even the simplest of surveillance cameras will due for this purpose, but investing in a camera that has some added features, such as a motion sensor, is recommended.

2) Require a Signature

FedEx and UPS fulfill a significant portion online shipping deliveries. If your package is traveling with either one of these carriers, create an online account with them. From your account, you can request special delivery times, signature proof required for deliveries, etc.

3) Smart Door Locks

One of the best ways to protect your online shopping deliveries is with a smart door lock. Smart door locks can be activated remotely, so you can open your door when the delivery is made. This way, your package will be safe and sound inside.

4) Work With Neighbors

If you have an estimated day and/or time of arrival, you might want to reach out to your friends or neighbors and see if they can collect your package. If you do not have any available neighbors or friends, ask your workplace or school if your personal package can be delivered to their address.

5) Special Delivery Instructions

Before your package is delivered, leave a note on your door with special instructions. Let the driver know where you would like your package left (tucked behind a planter, by the back door, etc.), and ask them to take the note with them when they leave. (You wouldn’t want to leave any clues for a potential package robber!)

Millions of package thefts take place every year, but you can protect yourself from this issue. Although it may seem time-consuming to install an extra camera or ask your neighbor for a favor, the outcome of a safe package will be well worth your time.
