Gender equality is essential for sustainability because it ensures that everyone has equal access to resources and opportunities. This is especially true when it comes to decision-making processes that affect the environment and the future of our planet. Gender inequality has been a long-standing problem across the world, with women facing disparities in education, employment, healthcare, and economic opportunities. This issue of inequality has been recognized by the United Nations, which has included a goal to promote gender equality as part of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 17).

This goal seeks to eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, and ensure that they have the same rights and opportunities as men. In order to achieve this goal, it is essential to address the underlying causes of gender inequality, including unequal power dynamics, stereotypes, and cultural norms. It is only through the collective action of individuals, communities, and governments that we can overcome the barriers to achieving gender equality and create a more sustainable future for all.

5 Pillar of SDG5

  1. Working to end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
  2. Eliminating all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.
  3. Ending all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
  4. Recognizing and valuing unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies.
  5. Ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.

5 Exemplary Steps Taken for SDG5

  1. The UK government has implemented a program to help small businesses owned by women access finance and business support. This initiative provides loans, grants, and advice to help female entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. It also provides mentoring and training to help women gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the business world.
  2. Nike has launched a partnership with the United Nations Foundation to empower women and girls around the world through sport. This initiative focuses on using sport as a tool for change and provides access to sport programs, health education, and mentorship programs for women. The partnership also works to break down gender stereotypes and promote gender equality through sport.
  3. The United Nations has established a Gender Equality Fund to support projects that advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. This fund provides grants to organizations working to promote gender equality and provides resources for stakeholders to support their efforts.
  4. The World Bank has partnered with the International Finance Corporation to provide access to finance for women entrepreneurs in developing countries. This partnership provides access to financial resources, technical assistance, and mentoring to help women entrepreneurs access capital, start and grow businesses, and contribute to their local communities.
  5. The World Economic Forum has created the “Women in the Workplace” initiative to promote gender parity in the workplace. This initiative provides resources and guidance to help organizations create workplaces that are more inclusive and equitable for women. It also works to raise awareness of the gender pay gap and encourage companies to take action to bridge the gap.

Again, On International Women’s Day, it is important to recognize the integral role that women play in creating a more sustainable future. Not just today but everyday we have to remind ourselves thta sustainable living is more than solar panels and windmills. Gender equality is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and governments, organizations, and individuals must work together to address the underlying causes of gender inequality and promote access to resources and opportunities for all. With the collective action of individuals, communities, and governments, we can ensure that women are empowered and have a say in the decisions that shape our planet.
