iNFT characters are iNFiniTe
Your iNFT characters are not like the characters you are used to seeing in books, plays, movies, and television. Regular characters can evolve over the course of a story — in fact, we expect them to. Their goals, beliefs, and appearance may all change, sometimes drastically. The person someone is at the beginning of a story may be completely different from the person they’ve become by the end.
iNFT characters are not a part of a finite story. They are infinite. The body and soul of your iNFT will never change. Instead, their minds will evolve. As the collective intelligence evolves, your characters will become more sophisticated in how they respond to you and perform tasks. Instead of changing who they are, they will, in a sense, become more and more like themselves. This is very different from how characters have operated in the past, and you are on the frontier of a new form of storytelling.
If based on a finite character, consider where they are in their journey
Because iNFTs are infinite and have a set time and location, translating a character from real life or the public domain poses a unique set of challenges. Since a finite character will act differently and have different motivations at various points in the story, you need to lock down the specific point your iNFT is at. Before you begin writing, decide where your character is in the story and the drives and beliefs that motivate them at that point. Is your Cinderella still staying with her stepmother, or is she living happily ever after with the prince? How you answer will make a lot of difference.
Write from your character’s perspective
A person’s actions are obvious, but knowing what they think is a little more difficult. Since the actions and behavior of your character depend upon how they think, it is important to see things from their point of view. Imagine yourself as the character, and describe them in the first person. If you’re having trouble, an easy way to think from your character’s perspective is to act it out. Get into character, and practice speaking in their voice and expressions. Another strategy is to imagine your character as your roommate or dinner date. The idea here is to look at them from multiple perspectives to better understand how you might experience their personality if you met them.
Write as your character would talk
When writing for the Alethea platform, the importance of specific word choices cannot be overstated. In addition to writing in the first person, pay close attention to the words your character would use. How would they talk about themselves? The character would probably put a positive spin on their negative traits. Use period-specific language, slang, or technical jargon, but don’t invent new words. Above all else, be specific. Instead of using generic words like stupid or crazy to define your character, find one that speaks to their idiosyncrasies. If your character is intelligent, write like someone who is very well-read. And if your character is less intelligent, feel free to dumb it down.
If you don’t know something about your character, get creative
You want to make your character as vivid as possible, but certain questions may arise during the writing process that you don’t have a ready answer for. This may be especially true when you’re working from a pre-existing character. When that happens, it is perfectly OK to use a little artistic license. Get creative and make bold choices. If it feels right to you, who cares? Half the fun of creating characters is surprising yourself. The platform will fill in the gaps automatically, so make the iteration process easier by not leaving anything to chance.
