Can you imagine, you have just won a grand prize of one million dollars! Congratulations. You must be very happy and cannot believe how lucky you are. You plan for shopping trips, car, home, and purchases. Your list may have started but I do not know if it is going to end.

You bought most of the stuff you want, all the things you dream of owning, with one hope: to be happy. Yes, you answered me; I am so happy. So, I asked: Will this happiness last for years to come? Or is it a short-term happiness?

You’d probably assume having one million dollars would make you happy forever. In fact, you could buy whatever your heart desires, as you already did! However, research shows that after the initial thrill of all the money wears off, richer people are no happier in the long run (Brickman, Coates, & Janoff-Bulman, 1978).

There is something called Hedonic Adaptation that explains this. It involves humans getting used to their new situation, whether it is good or bad, and then going back to how they felt before. It’s like when you receive a beautiful car. Then, at first, driving it everywhere makes you feel over the moon with excitement. However…
