Lakeside on Mljet
I’ve been experimenting of late with watercolor pencils, as I’m looking for an art medium that’s more portable travel-wise than pastels. I’d had this photo (from the island of Mljet, Croatia) on my shortlist for 15 years. I thought the subject matter would work well with watercolors.
I worked a base layer of watercolor pencil. After activating the colors with a wet brush, I applied a second layer to darker areas (boat shadow, wave lines…) by pulling the pigment directly off the pencil with a fine brush. Then — to emphasize the depth — worked in soft pastels onto the pine branches.
I’m heading off soon for an art/swimming/running sabbatical. I’ll surely bring watercolor pencils to play with. More to follow…
