The older homes in the La Roquette neighborhood of the French city of Arles sport these marvelous wooden shutters. I loved this Mediterranean shade of blue — perhaps the most popular color in the neighborhood.

The family in this house hung flower baskets onto the shutters — actually they’d planted the entire facade with flowers. I never tired of wandering around Arles. We must return there soon.

Here is my interpretation of the scene, done in soft L’Ecu pastels on 100% cotton print making rag.
