Cosmic Champs leading mobile P2E gaming on Algorand
Meet the team behind Cosmic Champs, our vision, NFTs, and roadmap for game launch
If you’re a fan of Algorand, you’ve probably heard of Cosmic Champs. Cosmic Champs is a free-to-play, play-and-earn, mobile game that is designed to be fun. We aim to remove many of the barriers that have so far prevented the world’s 2.6 billion mobile gamers from playing blockchain games. Playing Cosmic Champs will be as simple as downloading the app from your preferred mobile store and hitting play — no wallet, no crypto and no NFTs are required.
Cosmic Champs is a retro space themed, tower-rush format, real-time strategy game developed by gaming studio, Mad Shapes. Ships crewed by Champs traverse the cosmos, descending to do battle on hostile, resource-rich planets. Players battle in online arenas fighting tooth, nail, and antenna for their share of loot and intergalactic fame. Players aim to assemble the perfect combination of battle-hardened Champs, Spells, and Buildings to formulate superior strategies to outmanoeuvre opponents in skill-based gameplay to win tokens and other treasures.
The open beta of Cosmic Champs will be released in mid October, and be available for Android and iPhones. “We have a closed beta that will be available to our existing NFT holders happening in September. We encourage people who want to see the early gameplay to come and join the community on Discord,” says Cosmic Champs CEO Matty Blanchard. “We’ll be having weekly battles between myself and Simon, our CTO, and we’ll be giving away beta access via competitions for those who don’t own an NFT.”
Despite continuing to see promising growth, the blockchain gaming sector is yet to truly harness its full potential. Most blockchain games don’t have a dedicated mobile app, require a wallet and NFTs (that can be expensive) before getting started. These barriers can be prohibitive — locking out many new players which limits opportunities for growth in the sector. Cosmic Champs was designed to be mobile first, and free-to-play, as a way of onboarding some of the world’s 2.6 billion mobile gamers onto blockchain gaming. “We identified that there was a real gap when it came to mobile gaming and play-and-earn” says Matty. “If you want to be earning tokens while playing games, you most likely need to load a browser-based game designed for PC and fire up your wallets. But we knew there’s a huge amount of people in the world who just want a fun, free and easy to access game to play on their mobiles that also gives them access to play-and-earn.”
Not only is Cosmic Champs driving innovation with our game design, we are also driving innovation in the NFT space. “Our NFTs aren’t your usual randomly generated 2D PFPs” says Simon. “Our NFTs are game ready 3D models, compatible with the ARC3 ASA convention. Each model took days to build and weeks to finalize. The amount of effort and people involved in creating our NFTs is comparable to that in the AAA game production. You can also use our 3D model viewer on the Cosmic Champs website to browse and interact with our NFTs”.
The Cosmic Champs 3D NFTs motivated marketplace Algogems and indexer NFT Explorer to add 3D viewing functionality to their platforms. “We love that the community was so excited by our NFTs and to see the ecosystem adjust so quickly. Now everyone can see our NFTs at their best” says Simon. Sales and auctions of Cosmic Champs NFTs in COSG also led to greater functionality such as being able to trade and track sales of NFTs in native ASA tokens.
“Algorand’s blockchain allows for fractional NFTs, which are perfect for GameFi NFTs, which have different rarities of similar items. Using this approach allows us to mint larger number of NFTs without reducing their quality” says Simon. The ability to own NFTs and in-game items on the blockchain is likely to be a significant driver for adoption of blockchain technology in the gaming industry, as customer expectations and experiences evolve to demand greater return on their gaming investments.
“Although our NFTs are fractional, holders are incentivized to own more than one fraction, for an in-game boost,” says Matty. “Bridging technology is very exciting! It will allow our NFTs to move between blockchains so, for example, you’ll be able to buy your Cosmic Champs NFT on Open Sea, and play with it in a Cosmic Champs game, which we hope will bring even more people to Algorand.”
Efficient, secure, economical, low energy and carbon negative, Algorand is especially well suited to a supercharged GameFi token. “Although Algorand isn’t yet a dominant token in the blockchain gaming space, we expect the launch of Cosmic Champs to change that,” says Growth Lead Akasha Rose.
Blockchain gaming accounts for 60% of all blockchain activity, with about 1 million monthly active wallets participating in play-and-earn games. “There’s a huge gap currently between the numbers of play-and-earn users, and the 3 billion gamers who are active in the world,” says Akasha. “The first blockchain game to be widely adopted and played is likely the catalyst that will drive ongoing GameFi adoption and innovation for the next decade.”
Cosmic Champs is a blue-chip project that graduated from 2021’s Algorand Foundation and Draper University Blockchain Accelerator Program and our private sale was oversubscribed with Borderless Capital taking the lead VC role. We launched our governance token, Cosmic Gold (ticker COSG), in April 2022, and have since been a top 3 ASA on Algorand by TVL (excluding stable coins), #1 on Humble in liquidity, and a top 5 NFT project on NFT Explorer in July.
