Algorology Digest #11: AI on a Stick, Predicting Startup Success

I couldn’t miss an opportunity to talk about the recent argument between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg so I wrote an article about why they are both missing the point. Shares are much appreciated, since it’s my first piece on the Entrepreneur Magazine ❤

Deep Learning On A Stick

Intel has recently launched a very powerful piece of hardware called Neural Compute Stick that gives product developers and researchers the ability to enable prototyping validation and deployment of inference applications offline instead of cloud, reducing the latency and power consumption.

As Intel states, the Movidius NCS is “the world’s first self-contained AI accelerator in a USB format,” and is designed to allow host devices to process deep neural networks natively — or in other words, at the edge. In turn, this provides developers and researchers with a low power and low cost method to develop and optimize various offline AI applications.

Asking Machines To Predict Success Of A Startup

In 2009, Ira Sager of Businessweek magazine set a challenge for Quid AI’s CEO Bob Goodson: programme a computer to pick 50 unheard of companies that are set to rock the world.

Nearly eight years later, the magazine revisited the list to see how “Goodson plus the machine” had performed. The results surprised even Goodson: Evernote, Spotify, Etsy, Zynga, Palantir, Cloudera, OPOWER — the list goes on. The list featured not only names widely known to the public and leaders of industries, but also high performers such as Ibibo, which had eight employees in 2009 when selected and now has $2 billion annual sales as the top hotel booking site in India. Twenty percent of the companies chosen had reached billion-dollar valuations.

Super interesting read about how we can augment our sense of intuition with machine intelligence.

Boeing Invests In AI Startup

It’s great to see that even big non-tech companies are finally getting into adopting machine intelligence. Boeing is investing in SparkCognition, an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning company based in Texas, Boeing said. The investment comes from Boeing HorizonX, the company’s venture arm that was established earlier this year.

SparkCognition is currently in its initial $32 million funding round. With this investment, Boeing joins a strategic group of companies that are investing, led by Verizon Ventures. SparkCognition specializes in the information technology security and industrial operations fields. According to Boeing, it has developed a cognitive, data-driven analytics platform for users in energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, finance, aerospace, defense, telecommunications and security sectors.
