When Giuseppe Lazzaro started his first job as a programmer, he was required to travel a lot. After a decade, Gisueppe decided he wanted to do something else, such as pursuing his love for jewelry.

He decided to channel his pent-creative energy — something he felt he had to hold back as a programmer — into jewelry design. Since young, 59-year-old Giuseppe held a passion for traditional Italian jewelry. So, together with a friend, he opened a jewelry shop close to the Spanish Square in Rome and has since then run the business for 24 years, successfully and happily.

“I had no formal training or education in jewelry design, but I have great passion. It is the secret of my success,” said Giuseppe with a wide smile.

His jewelry pieces are popular among tourists, particularly among Europeans and Americans, who made up some of his earliest and most loyal customers. However, in recent years, Giuseppe noticed a growing number of Chinese tourists, and his not wrong. In 2018 alone, over 2 million Chinese visited Italy.

Rings are his favorite pieces. His philosophy: “If the jewelry is special and beautiful itself, I would design simple setting to not overshadow the beauty of the original stone. If the original stone is plain, I would make the ring base more complicated in style”.

In general, as he observes, Chinese tourists love small delicate pieces of jewelry while local people love larger pieces. And he also noticed that some Chinese tourists would ask for Alipay, which he has no idea of at the beginning but felt should not miss.

Again he took a leap of faith, installing Alipay despite not knowing much about e-wallet, that serves over 1.2 billion users worldwide, together with its local partners. The e-wallet is also the choice payment app of Chinese tourists, according to a 2018 Nielsen study.

“I wish to offer the growing number of Chinese tourists a better shopping experience in my store,” says Giuseppe sharing why he would love to adopt Alipay, “ it also facilitates the payment process for me.”
