General Information

Contemporary style appeared in 1960th on the base of Scandinavian design. The aim of the movement was to produce comfortable, simple, elegant and affordable pieces of furniture and provide functional comfortable modern inexpensive living to the large number of people.

The slogan of the style can be : Less is More. The style is based on the harmony (between colour, light and shape) and moderation. It is very architectural, geomagnetic, monochromatic, calm. It is oriented along strong horizontal- vertical axis. The style does not accept any sort of clatter, therefore each piece of furniture plays an important role in the space and should be accurately chosen. Simple clear planning, holistic, focused on comfort and harmony. Contemporary style does not have clear borders, it can be mixed with minimalism, country, new classic, as long as if serves the purpose made with moderation.

Colour

Cream, white, black, beige — these are the bedrock upon which contemporary design lies. Monochromatic tones are very welcomed and it could be creme with a hint of pink, green with grey, beige and gold. If the wall is painted a bright monochromatic colour, then the rest of the space should be done in neutral colours in order to even out the colour scheme. Contemporary can also be called a gallery style, as walls painted with white or beige are a perfect background for art. The absence of colour is fulfilled by different surfaces.

Walls and Floors

Empty space takes an almost sculptural quality, carved out by the strong architecture. Walls are usually painted one colour or covered with wallpaper that has nothing distinctive on it. For ceiling gypsum plasterboards (with built it lighting) are usually used. Floor is laminated or covered with tiles. Materials are widely used for zoning. Artificial materials such as: chrome, steel, lacquer, glass, plastic, tiles are very popular. The materials are simple and affordable, could be easily found in every furniture/building material shop. No matter how simple the material is all the finishes should be a very high quality. Contemporary style is very friendly to the materials that bounce light. Absence of colour is fulfilled by a variety of textures.

Furniture and Carpet (Area Rugs)

The Furniture is not decorative, it is comfortable and functional, most of the time — monochromatic, it has clean lines and striking profiles. No skirts, no sleepovers. The legs of the furniture should be shown. Furniture is also made of affordable materials such as glass, plastic, metal. When choosing the colour of the furniture pay attention on dark blue and green colours, black, brown, creme. Dark furniture gives a great contrast. Other important elements of the interior are: glass partitions, curtains, furniture constructions built-it wardrobes and kitchens. All the surfaces should be smooth, the angles of the objects are a bit rounded. The shelves should rather be clothed as it is not common to expose the objects in contemporary style. For the library, the covers of books are suggested to be monochromatic (special covers should be put on books) Interior objects can be very textural as long as they are coloured the same colour as the other elements of the interior. Ottomans and side tables are used for accent. Carpets are not common in the contemporary style, but they are still used if from wall to wall and without any colour pattern on it. Area rugs usually have large geometrical abstractions on them.

Windows and Lighting

Built-it and accent lighting is used. The shelves can be illuminated by hidden lamps. Natural lighting is very important. Windows are left abundant, they are left undressed in order to highlight the lines and let the light in. For privacy issues, use monochromatic curtain that will blend into the wall, it should be very accurately tailored.

Art and Accessorises

The accessorises add life and colour to the scene. Considering the fact that there should be a minimum art and accessorises, each piece should be carefully selected. Ethnic and classical minimalistic art is especially suitable for the interior. Black and white photography would be great. Because the walls in the Contemporary space are painted light monochromatic colour, they are perfect for gallery like presentation of big pieces of art. When working with this style forget about clusters family photos and overwhelming art collections. Art should be framed in a dark colour if framed at all.

Who Likes Contemporary Style?

People who prefer simplicity over decoration, comfort , quality and function over brand. These people treat their living space as a place where they can have a good rest. It is not an interior to show off your wealth, it is a simple interior for a simple and tasteless life.
