Loft style is a product of urbanisation. Loft apartments are generally built from former industrial buildings.

“Less partitions, more air” can be a slogan of the Loft style. There should be minimum furniture, minimum decorations and maximum space. there should be a feeling of Minimalist and sophisticated elegance. The concept is to harmoniously combine the contrasting elements under one roof, for example, exposed old brick wall and ultra modern furniture. Flaws in finishings are respected and embraced in loft interiors. The style has a sense of spontaneity, restricted furniture compositions might ruin the main idea of the loft.

The main features of the loft style are:

  • Open planning, minimum of partition. Functional zones ( such as kitchen, dining room, bedroom, study room) are separated from each other with the help of colour, texture, lighting. Glass walls can also be used to separate the space without ruining the holistic picture of the space.
  • Industrial past: old wooden floors, brick walls, structural columns, pipes and system of ventilation. All of that is the key of a good loft interior.
  • All that things listed above, should harmoniously exist with high tech objects, chrome surfaces, sound and audio systems, glass partitions, modern art.
  • Light and cold colour pallet (grey, brown, blue). Very often one of 4 walls is painted into a different colour or cover it with a different finish, that is another trick that helps to divide the space into zones.
  • Furniture, apart from being minimalistic and functional, divides the space of the flat of zones with the help of its position (the bar table separates the kitchen from the dining area). Loft space can be treated as a background for furniture, for example a sofa could become the main focus of the space, is should attract attention with its massive size and colour and/or texture. Loft furniture can combine materials which do not match at the first glance (plastic and wood, stainless steel and fur, luxurious fabric and synthetics).
  • High light ceilings and huge windows. Loft interior requires a lot of day light. An urban landscape should open from the windows.
  • Modern art and unusual accessorises (graffiti, posters, road symbol signs, massive floor vases, paintings not attached but leaning on the wall)

First lofts appeared in the middle of 20th century in New York. In 1940 because of a high rental price lots of factories and warehouses had to move out of the city, leaving huge industrial spaces empty. This spaces were then occupied by young people of creative professions with relatively low income. It was very convenient to rent a loft space because of a low rental price. Spacious and well lit spaces were perfect for artists and could be used both as living and working place. By the end of 1950th loft flats became elite, only wealthy people could afford living there. Nowadays, loft is still very poplar, it is more then interior, it is a statement, it is a life style.
