Growing your Medium audience is not rocket science; neither is it a walk in the park.

It is more like riding a one-wheeled vehicle while trying to solve a Rubik’s cube.

It is tricky but doable with a lot of practice!

First off, the secret sauce of Medium: the perfect response.

You’re thinking, “Responses? I thought I was supposed to write articles!”

Surprise, surprise: interacting with other writers will gain you readers.

The deal is, any time you read anyone’s article, don’t just press the clap button and run away.

Take some time to steadily think about what you read.

Did it make you laugh or cry or perhaps want to throw your phone across the room?

Whatever it may be, share that feeling in your response.

But there’s more!

Don’t just comment “Great article!”

That’s like giving someone a high-five with a wet noodle.

Boring!

Instead, pick out something specific that caught your eye.

Maybe it was a clever analogy or a mind-blowing fact.

Whatever it is, mention it in your response.

For example, let’s say you read an article about how dogs can smell fear.

You could respond with something like:

“Wow, I had no idea my pup could really smell when my palms are sweaty! No wonder he is always trying to lick my face before job interviews. Thanks for teaching me something new!”

Get the idea?

It shows I actually read it, gave a personal connection, and even dropped in a little humor.

That’s the kind of post that gets noticed!

Here’s a pro tip: Ask a question in your response.

It can be something in the article or related to that.

It opens the door for more conversation, and conversation is like gold on Medium.

But hold your horses!

Before you run amok willy-nilly, make sure you’re following writers in your niche.

If you write about food, don’t bother answering articles on quantum physics unless you are writing about quantum cooking, which seems somehow appealing, I think.

Remember, quality always trumps quantity.

A couple of thoughtful responses trump a hundred “Awesome post!” comments.

Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard way when I spent a whole day saying “Great post!” to everything I saw.

My fingers hurt, and I didn’t gain one more follower!

The other one of my tricks is to put just a teensy bit of information you already know in your answers.

For example, if someone writes about the best ways to grow tomatoes and you are an absolute wizard at growing tomatoes, then share your special tip.

Just do not give away all of your secrets, you have to keep some for your own articles, right?

Lastly, be yourself.

Your responses and articles will be what distinguishes you by your singular voice.

Be sarcastic, sweet, or in between, but let your personality ooze out from your finger-tips onto the page.

Now, y’all know — the magic formula to a perfect Medium response.

It’s not easy, but it is so, so worth it.

Now go forth, and respond like the Medium Superstar you are.

P.S. If it fails, just post a cat gif. Everyone likes cats, right?
