Do We Always Have to Read Each Other’s Work?

This is something that’s been bothering me during my time on Medium. How often — if at all — should we read each other’s work?

The question should be easy to answer. Read stuff that interests you.

But it’s not that straightforward.

I’m pretty lazy at reading other people’s work. After I’ve written my pieces and done my day job as a gardener, cooked the meal for my family, and faffed around doing stuff I don’t need to do, I don’t have much time for Medium articles.

But I try.

I see it as my duty to the people who read my work. I also enjoy it. But like all the enjoyable things in life, I put it off until the last minute.

I’m scared of enjoying myself: sex, exercise, good food, sobriety, reading, good company, good movies, listening to music.

All of these things I enjoy immensely, but I find ways to put them off by procrastination. Making up jobs to do like going to the dump or the supermarket to buy cat food.

There’s nothing more pleasurable than sitting down and reading stuff here on Medium. I opened 50 stories this morning, and read them all. Most I liked. Some I…
