I’ve had experience with so-called pyramid schemes, although my experience was with a Multi-Level Marketing company, also known as an MLM.

In theory, an MLM sells products first and recruits people second. This is its primary distinction from a pyramid scheme. The basic premise of a pyramid scheme is making money based on recruiting not on product sales.

The company I was involved with sold a product I was passionate about. It also involved recruiting others to sell the product.

IMHO that doesn’t jive with Medium’s business model.

In MLM the incentive to recruit is financial and goes like this: I make money from recruiting you to sell products. We both make money when you recruit someone who also sells products. All three of us make money when your recruit recruits someone to sell products, and on and on.

Oh, and it also goes upward. The person who recruited me, and the person who recruited them, and on and on upward also make money.

That’s a lot of hands in the pot.

IMHO this also doesn’t jive with Medium’s business plan.
