I came over to Medium reluctantly in 2021 because I was told by a twitter friend that he was making $3k a month on the platform and it would be a good add-on to my magazine work.

I’d been resisting temptation to try it for months because I thought it would be a time suck, a distraction from real work, and would probably not pay very well. I was right.

But I couldn’t ignore $3k in income, so on a slow work day, I decided to give it a go. I fell out with an interfering editor in my first week, ended up completely disillusioned, and nearly gave up. But I didn’t. I persevered and got hooked.

Medium was never that lucrative for me, but I enjoyed it.

Some people say it’s narcissistic to write for money, and wrong to have joined the platform for the purpose of generating an income. I don’t see it that way.

There’s nothing wrong with freelancers trying out other income streams. We all have to make a living somehow, and the market for work with the print press is shrinking day by day because magazines and newspapers keep closing.

Medium obviously isn’t a good part of the mix at the moment, but that doesn’t change the fact that I want to keep checking in, and I’m still hooked.
