Poking the Algorithm
…or is the algorithm poking me?
So I took a breather from Medium. Not because I was mad about the ongoing problems here and “boy, was I gonna show ‘em.” Nope. I noticed something. And wanted to see for myself.
So then, dear readers, what did I notice?
First of all, it’s been some time since numbers crashed. Not for all of us, but for some. My numbers instantaneously fell so far all I had left was an echo.
Why it happened to me and not others is a different mystery. I don’t know why the difference and do not begrudge them the gains from the amazing writings they continue to post.
But algorithms being algorithms, choices get made.
When I first noticed my numbers had crashed orders of magnitude, I shrugged because I just knew it was a glitch, a temporary one, and I would be back to my old self soon enough.
But nopers — didn’t happen.
For a few moments I thought it might be an underhanded way to encourage us to upgrade our memberships. I considered it and right before upgrading I paused.
After checking around, I found from others that membership tier didn’t seem to play a role. Glad I didn’t jump that gun.
