So you’ve just earned your first $100 on Medium.

It feels special, right?

Maybe it’s the first money you’ve ever earned from writing. Or perhaps the first money you’ve made from writing something different, like fiction or political comment.

Congratulations. You’ve made it. You may even want to call yourself a writer. And why not? You’ve earned it.

But here’s the trap.

It’s very easy to think of that first $100 as being precious. Like a sacred sack of coins you can ferret away into a piggy bank ready for a rainy day.

Don’t think like that.

That $100 you’ve got in your bank is the same hundred dollars you got from waiting on tables or digging a hole in the ground. Or whatever job you do.

Treat it the same!

You don’t do half a day of a new job and then give it up because you’ve amassed a hundred bucks. Only a fool would do that, and yet that’s the attitude writers have.

They earn their first hundred and think it’s special. That they are special! You’re not!
