For the last 2 years I’ve been reading farewell posts from the former top writers of Medium. Broadcasting their failure to their 100,000 followers like a Spirit Airlines gate attendant announcing the final boarding call for the 5:15 flight to Substack.

Their handsome facades and unjustified confidence convinced Medium’s readers that they were good writers years ago. They had a stranglehold on the top writer boards for years until recently. Their stories were low effort and poorly written, but they made a lot of money off shitposting.

All I got out of their stories was comedy material. I found my audience originally by making fun of their contradictions and pointing out their lies. I wasn’t the only one sick of these fountains of misinformation.

They presented their opinions as knowledge and lied about how much they earned writing. No one challenged their lies.

According the zero the research the departed writers were too lazy to do before writing a story, the top writers aren’t making the same money on Medium that they were in 2022.

That’s simply not true. They made less because they weren’t top writers anymore. Talented writers are making more…
