I generally get a lot of questions regarding the basic and pre-requisites for the Power BI so I thought to list them down.

The main purpose of writing this to understand the advantages of Power BI and use them the most to improve your report performance and efficiency.

  1. Use a star schema while making your data model it helps Power BI and all the BI tools in the world for a better understanding and also the most important query performance which makes your report fast.
  2. Include the data only relevant, I have seen many times people usually load the data which is not required which makes the report size large leading it to perform slower than usual.
  3. Query folding is a very important and hot topic in today's era as it helps to query at the source side rather than performing all the operation on the Power BI.
  4. Use Import mode if your data is not too large and now as composite models are available we can also use that to achieve certain scenarios.
  5. When working with time intelligence it is always advised to create a separate date table for smooth functioning.
  6. Try to use measures instead of creating calculated columns.
  7. If you have to refresh your dataset and you don't want it to take hours to complete we can always use an incremental refresh as it is now available for pro users.
  8. The relationship filter should be single direction vs bidirectional.
  9. To understand better the basic architecture of your Power BI Service always view the workspaces and the report in the lineage view.
  10. Each table should serve a specific purpose and include data (fact) and lookup (dim) tables.
