4 Ways to Seamlessly Boost Your Creativity Everyday
Whether you need to finish that presentation to show your boss, finish that essay for class, or you’re a creator working on a video or blog post. You’re going to need to spark your creativity and get some ideas flowing.
You’ll find many articles fill of tips and tricks to generate ideas, but the issue with those are they often suggest 30 minutes of “braindump” journaling a day, or putting up sticky notes and whiteboards. All things that require finding time in your already filled schedule to do these things.
But it doesn’t have to be like that. My tips are different as these are all things you can easily fit into your daily schedule:
I’m sure I don’t need to explain how much reading can change your life.
It’s very easy to get into the same routines and not get any new stimulus, or any new ways of thinking in our life’s. But a book will change that. From page to page is the ideas, the mind sets, the advice and the experiences from the author. By reading, you’re literally getting the thoughts from another individual directly entering your brain.
Now, try to tell me you cant generate ideas for yourself after having read a book. Read books based on your interests, consume the the information and you’re effectively priming yourself for creativity.
2. Listen to Podcasts
Listening to a podcast is like actually being in the room listening to the conversation, except you don’t have to have say anything, you just listen.
You’re going to get much the same benefits from listening to a podcast as you would from reading books — a whole lot of new raw information.
But, obviously with a book you’re going to have to take the time to sit down and actually read the book. Whereas, with a podcast you can listen to it almost anywhere. While you’re cooking, vacuuming, brushing your teeth even. The possibilities are endless.
This will in a timely manner give you crazy amounts of information that you can begin to shape into ideas of your own.
3. Walk alone
No headphones, no podcast, no audio book, no music. Just you, yourself and your thoughts.
A lot of people will say “Here’s a creativity tip! Download an audible book or podcast, pop in some headphones and listen to it while you’re walking to cram in some extra knowledge.”
No, no, no.
By doing that you’re missing out on one of the single best opportunities you have to get creative. There’s literally studies that have shown that creativity levels are consistently and considerably higher when walking compared to sitting.
You’re going to generate easily some of your best ideas while walking. Nietzsche even went as far as saying, “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.”
Nikola Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field on a walk through a city park in Budapest in 1882, which is one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time.
A lot of the articles I’ve already published here on medium have even been mostly crafted while walking.
4. Take a Cold Shower
Most people will say the idea of taking a cold shower is foolish or stupid. But I’m telling you, this is going to put the cheery on top to your creativity.
So, you’ve been reading the books, listening to the podcasts and doing the walking. You’re bound to have many ideas brewing, but where do you begin? How do they shape together?
That’s where the cold shower comes in. You jump under the cold water and that’s a shock to the system. What happens is your body will increase the production of epinephrine and norepinephrine, adrenaline hormones important in heightening brain performance, focus, and acuity.
This will give you amazing mental clarity. It’s just like entering a state of flow, everything will become clear and you’ll experience; heightened creativity, increased performance and accelerated Problem Solving.
There’s been a many of times that I have hopped out of a cold shower and reached for my phone to finish a paragraph which had previously eluded me.
To reach peaks of creativity consume as much information as you can. Spend time ‘chewing’ your thoughts and mixing them together. Then sit down and do the work.
The perfect strategy is the one that works for you. Try some of these out and get the ideas rolling.
I’m off to listen to podcast, because I’ve now got another article to write.
