At first they were skeptical. “We shoul dhave a room,” I said. They looked me over and gave me the universal expression for yeah right. I wasn’t Asian, I wasn’t in my 20s, and my entourage consisted of another pail European 40something and a Chilean comic-book artist. Not their typical clientele. I looked at their reservation list for a familiar name. Louise. “We’re here with Louise,” I said. Suddenly their attitudes shifted into the higher energy reserved for customers who mattered. “Oh, Louise!” the young managers said, perfectly synchronized. Suddenly they were relaxed and friendly. I was welcome here. “They are all in Room Two.” But first things first—where were the bathrooms? The smell of mothballs marinating in the urinal was overwhelming if not creative. There was no paper to dry my hands and I couldn’t figure out how to activate the buttonless dryer. Back in the lounge, I ordered a Sapporo. A pained look came over the hosts. “We are out of Sapporo.” Either it was a popular drink or deeply uncool. I will never know.
