Karma’s not a bitch, it’s an ass

Karma is not some vindictive force that creates a magical balance in the world. It’s nobody’s bitch. Instead, it’s a pack mule, a beast of burden, an ass. It is plowing the fields, it is carrying the water, it is making shit happen.
Don’t sit around waiting for the Universe to do you a favour.
But I deserve this!
I hear this all the time. People somehow deserve to succeed, they deserve to be rich, they deserve to win. And they ignorantly call this fate, or karma. Bad things have happened to them before, so good things have to happen to them now. Jesus will help them win the basketball tournament, God will intervene for their SAT score, the Universe will put in a good word at the bank for a car loan, and Karma is their retirement plan.
Somehow all this worship became passive. Belief became a force that surrounds you like the servants of a grand estate. You deserve it. Why? Because you’re the next Great Gatsby, the next Yeesus? Because you are better than everybody else? Because you are special? Because there are big plans in store for you?
I hate to break it to you, but karma isn’t something that just happens.
Karma is a Sanskrit term that literally means “action” or “doing”. In the Buddhist tradition, karma refers to action driven by intention which leads to future consequences. —the Google
Karma isn’t payback or a payday. Karma is work. Karma is a plan. Karma is the result of doing something with purpose which creates your own fate.
You don’t get to sit back and enjoy the ride. You have to work.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
That’s hard! You have to give up something to get something. You have to be conscious of your surroundings. You have to act with intent which means you have to think about the consequences of your actions. If you screw someone over, the Universe isn’t going to immediately step in and punish you. But you probably won’t be helped by that person in the future. And if you do that too many times, you’re going to die lonely without any friends. But that’s your own damn fault, not some otherworldly punishment.
Be honest and generous and some people might take advantage of you. But most people will be grateful and give back. Don’t just think you deserve it. Put in some effort.
It’s the long game that matters.
