There Is No Such Thing As ‘Small Decisions’

On how tiny, unthoughtful decisions can change our lives forever

We all think it’s the big moments that will mark our lives: our graduation day, entering college, the wedding day, and, for some, the birth of a child.

And while we don’t want to take attention away from these significant moments in our private lives, they are given undue importance when weighed against the small decisions we make.

It’s these decisions, the ones we make almost without truly considering the weight of their consequences, that dictate our lives without, perhaps dangerously, realizing it. I’ve experienced this several times.

For years, throughout my adolescence, my enormous passion for history made me believe that when the time came to choose a university course — with the belief that it would be something definitive for the rest of my life — I wouldn’t hesitate for a second, and becoming a history teacher was the path.

No one, especially myself, could predict that a short trip to England — also unpredictable — would completely change my mind.

A few weeks later, maybe realizing that the world was bigger than the valley of my mountain, I ended up choosing a course in International Relations focusing on English and French…
