Consistently staying active is one of my top five struggles as a neurodivergent person. Logically, I know that to be a healthy human, movement is important. Add to that the constant bombardment of the contradicting ‘shoulds’ and ‘should nots’ of the fitness industry, it’s a mental recipe for disaster. In the realm of physical fitness, the journey isn’t just about the body; it’s about the mind, too. From ADHD and autism spectrum disorders to dyspraxia and sensory processing differences, neurodivergent individuals may encounter barriers that make traditional fitness routines difficult to adhere to.

Understanding Neurodiversity in Fitness

Neurodiversity encompasses a range of neurological differences that contribute to unique perspectives, behaviors, and ways of processing information. While each neurodivergent individual experiences the world differently, certain commonalities can impact physical fitness endeavors:

  1. Sensory Sensitivities: Many neurodivergent individuals experience heightened sensory sensitivities, making environments like gyms overwhelming due to bright lights, loud noises, and crowded spaces.
