It all started at the beginning of 2022. After all my bills were paid, I was left with less than $100 in my account and I was at the point of turning to food banks for help. Things had gotten really bad. At this point, even a McDonald’s meal seemed to be a luxury. My job just wasn’t simply paying enough to make ends meet so I began to porn some of my personal items.

I turned to the internet for help

During the pandemic I had been on YouTube like 10 to 12 hours a day watching videos about getting rich quick. I watched videos about “Drop shipping” and gave that a shot for a couple of months. I tried “affiliate marketing”. I was convinced that it would work after watching tons of YouTube gurus. I began a “blog” and even dipped my toe in to freelance work on “Fiver”.

The list is endless which includes selling educational materials, completing online surveys, secret shopper etc. After all this effort do you know how much my hourly rate was? It was pennies!! I realised that the only people making money were the gurus through their watch hours. I had been suckered in.

It was a God send

Disappointed about the results from my research I was on the brink of giving up. I don’t know how I was inspired to suddenly get up, grab my MacBook, take photos of my spare room, and then post them on Airbnb. Honestly, it was all a blur. I remember thinking that no-one will book the room and put it to the back of my mind. Two days later I got my first booking from a Dutch gentleman for 5 nights. I was nervous when I saw the notification and for 2 hours I procrastinated about cancelling the booking. I had never had strangers come and stay!

My apartment

My first guest arrives

I cleaned the room, put clean bedding, and waited. I can’t believe how lucky I was as Dirk was such a great guest to host. He had come to visit his son who was in a band. He had booked through Airbnb because of price and locality to his son’s house, who was house sharing with other band members. It was like having an old friend stay. And I have not looked back since.

Thank you Airbnb for digging me out of a hole

Last year, I both Airbnb’d the whole apartment at the weekends and the spare room during the rest of the week. When the whole apartment was taken, I had nowhere to stay. Thus, I slept in my car most weekends. This helped to keep the costs down. All through the year I kept track of my bookings through an Excel spreadsheet. In 2022, I made $20,084.93 and can’t thank Airbnb enough for digging me out of a hole. As a result, I am now a “Superhost” which I am extremely proud of.

Do I have any regrets?

None so far :). I have not looked back since January 2022 and have hosted more than 230 guests. I can’t express how rewarding it has been and have met some amazing people along the way.

I am an Airbnb host and recently, after hosting some 230+ guests and a year of hard work, I achieved “Super Host” status. I now write about my own personal experiences as a host giving my readers my insight into the Airbnb community.
